SNAILS R SEXY is a dark, lush world of sound coming out of the contemporary Los Angeles noise scene, with nods to early 1970's Krautrock experiments, Sun Ra-inspired solo synth bursts, Japanoise sonic assaults and Heavy Metal flourishes. Musician/filmmaker Hans Fjellestad follows his critically acclaimed live album Kobe Live House with this visceral, densely layered studio project produced with analog synthesizers, theremin and vacuum tube processors.

a mountain is a mammal is about human beings. Science and technology surely had a hand in its evolution but in the end, it's about people. Two people, in fact, and happenstance. Marcos Fernandes (California) and Mike Pride (New York) are two drummers. They met one rainy night in Tokyo while on their respective tours in the Spring of 2005. Collaborations ensued and the two recorded duets one sunny afternoon in New York City. The results showed that there was chemistry. And the proof is in this pressing - a collection of dialogues between two people who passed in the night and met again, days upon days later.

ItRubble 2 is the second in a series of compilations featuring works by members and ensembles of the Trummerflora Collective, the group of independent music makers, who since its inception in 2000 has produced a considerable catalogue of recorded works both composed and improvised as well as installations, visual art, writings and film. This collection offers a taste of the diverse musical landscape these artists inhabit. Nathan Hubbard's tracks series is an ongoing set of compositions conceived for large ensemble using modular notation and open instrumentation. In general, these are shorter pieces with open possibilities for interpretation, often based around repetitious figures and overlapping textures. Track 1(For RC) is dedicated to composer/guitarist/trumpeter Rhys Chatham. Based around a central loop played by two like instruments, it deals mostly with rhythmic possibilities of overlapping loops in multiple meters, using three levels of activity pulse, vamps and section material. Track 2 (for AB) - Track 2 is dedicated to composer/woodwind player Anthony Braxton. It deals with similar issues as Track 1, without the pulse concept and with cells to be read in any clef. Lisle Ellis and Marcos Fernandes deliver a spirited dialogue on bass and percussion. Gunther's Grass began in 2005 as a collaboration between Marcelo Radulovich and Christopher Adler, to bring together two ancient drone-based instruments from across the world, the medieval European hurdy-gurdy and the Lao/Northeast Thai mouth organ khaen. Permanent Flow contributes an out-take from their 2004 Accretions release featuring live improvisations by Joscha Oets, Andreas Wagner and Greg Stuat. Bala 1: As an homage to East Asian nobility and primitivism, Curtis Glatter delivers a percussion solo with a "call" of gentle expressionism "answered" by a hailstorm of percussive fire. Sound artist Damon Holzborn sculpts layers of sound, working with programmatic and abstracted audio materials. He extracts a rich palette out of small musical moments, pulling at a sound to discover unexpected textures inside of it. E. Digest is distilled from materials collected for the inSite 05 project Ellipsis, curated by Hans Fjellestad. Ellen Weller and Bob Weller paint an Impressionistic piano and soprano sax dialogue while Trio Maghreb are Tracy McMullen, Al Scholl and Marcos Fernandes who offer a track from their upcoming release wherein they explore open and structured improvisations, minimalism and the blues. VITRIOL: Jason Robinson, Al Scholl, Justin Grinnel, Curtis Glatter and őTenshun on turntables offer up an electro-acoustic improvisation featuring the shimmering production die cast by Nathan Hubbard. Once again robert m reinterprets an existing work, this time going back to a piece recorded live at Spring Reverb '04 with Ernesto Diaz-Infante, Marcos Fernandes, Rent Romus and robert m. A bit rawer and more "noise" oriented than previous efforts, it traces the continuing evolution of robert m's music.

It may seem unlikely for these four intrepid musicians from different parts of the globe to find themselves together in a Tijuana recording studio. But Haco (Japan), Hans (California), Jakob (Denmark) and Marcos (Japan/California) are accustomed to such strange circumstances. The idea (and hope) was to discover some new and spontaneous methods for mixing electronics and acoustic instruments between experienced players from different cultural locations and with very different voices. Jakob and Hans can communicate in an unusual code called danish, while Marcos and Haco have their own uncrackable code called japanese. But all four artists were able to find a common musical language, a kind of theme and variations, intentionally using limited material to explore musical moments from the inside out and create a unique atmosphere; sometimes chaotic and aggressive, often minimalist and contemplative. Their invented music appears on this cd exactly as it did during the studio session, so listeners can follow along with the conversation and interpret for themselves.

The idea for Xavier was simple - acoustic improvisational sounds by any and all means necessary. The result is a careful balance of control and chaos, of raw sound and delicate nuance. Each CD comes packaged in a limited edition hand-painted cover. The foundation of Santo Subito consists of Steven Dye's bass clarinet and Milton Cross' violin, and it is upon this foundation that they have built a commanding framework of sounds both traditional and non-traditional, encompassing homemade horns, drones, piano, electronics and percussion. While firmly rooted in neo-classical influences, the band relies heavily on the two members' extensive experience with the use of multiphonics and on their unpredictable manipulations of vibrating air and string. Part minimalist, part wall of sound, part pre-dawn dream, Santo Subito assembles a unique sonic palate from which they shape their powerful performances, which can only be classified as "unclassifiable".

In Autumn 2003, maverick musician/filmmaker Hans Fjellestad strapped a synth and powerbook on his back and hit clubs in Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nagoya. Fjellestad has always been drawn to Japan, and this tour (his second) did not disappoint. He performed with local improvisers like Takayuki Kato, Saga Yuki, Tetsu Saitoh, Takashi Kojima, Taku Han-Noda, Masayuki Akamatsu and others. He went into the studio with Kyoto-based laptop artist, Baiyon, to record their duo project JUSCO PUNK (2003/Brain Escape Sandwich). He ate delicious, wiggly things. Fjellestad even took time out of his touring schedule to shoot a scene with Bob Moog in the Harajuku district of Tokyo for his film MOOG (2004/Plexifilm). He visited temples in Kyoto on his day off. KOBE LIVE HOUSE was recorded live on October 17 at Big Apple, a jazz club in Chuo-ku, Kobe, Japan. This concert was part of Big Apple's 14th Anniversary Special Concert Series. Both sets are unedited and appear as they did the night of the show in Kobe. Fjellestad performed with a grand piano, Nord Lead 3 synth and a custom software instrument designed by Damon Holzborn. Fjellestad describes his rig, "My setup allowed me to be as mobile as possible. I could switch between synth, piano, microphone and powerbook or blend any combination with relative ease, which is really essential for an improviser. So I could literally go on stage with nothing pre-planned and still be confident that when the ideas came, I'd be able to access the right sounds immediately and keep up the momentum." KOBE LIVE HOUSE is Fjellestad's third solo release (and first live solo cd) on Accretions Records. This album completes a ternary cycle of music experimentation that began with RED SAUCE BABY (2000/Accretions), followed by 33 (2003/Accretions). According to the artist, "KLH is sort of a new realization of the material I'd been working with since 2000. In the Kobe sets, you can hear quotes, mash-ups and new mixes of the ensemble compositions from RSB as well as riffs on the solo piano work on 33. Now the cycle feels complete and I can move into some new areas."

Using field recordings and custom samples as a starting point, Holzborn makes the recognizable unrecognizable, subjecting his sound sources to manipulation through custom-programmed interfaces, traditional effects and interactive processes, rounding the disc off with a few tracks that are pure studio creations. Though Holzborn has abandoned his guitar for this project, he brings his instrumental approach to the laptop, programming instruments that can be played. This results in the same dynamicism and timbal exploration displayed in his ensemble work, apparent whether playing classical guitar or electric guitar abused by electronics.

Featuring Steve Barsotti, Christopher DeLaurenti, Marcos Fernandes, Mark Griswold, Alex Keller, Dale Lloyd, Perri Lynch, Robert Millis, Toby Paddock The Phonographers Union Live on Sonarchy Radio documents the live "on the air" performance by members of the Seattle Phonographers Union and guest Marcos Fernandes. The nine phonographers, or field recordists, armed with cd players, md players and a laptop, performed two sets of improvisations utilizing their various field captures. In the context of this improvisation, the only parameter set was that the artists use 'straight-up' field recordings, meaning un treated source material except for some equalozation, filtering and/or compression. Both pieces are presented here in their entirety without any edits, revealing the sensitive interactions of the improvisers as they create a continuously evolving series of 'possible spaces.' The performance was engineered and produced by Doug Haire at Jackstraw Productions in Seattle, Washington on April 12, 2003.

"33" is the new piano-oriented project by maverick musician, artist and filmmaker Hans Fjellestad. Fjellestad's relationship with the piano began in 1973, at age 5. In this new collection of 13 tracks he attacks the instrument, inside and out, with bows, plectra, slides, loose change, electronics, fists, fingers, megaphone, computer and whatever was handy, accompanied by synthesizers, accordion, sampler and field recordings from across the globe. "33" is no shuttle service to the expected solo piano spaces. This is an exploration of uncharted textures and strange tangents that often venture far from the piano keyboard into fantastical electronic soundscapes, but eventually always returning to the black and whites, hammers and strings, the source.

Lesli Dalaba - trumpet Fred Frith - guitar Eric Glick Rieman - prepared and extended rhodes electric piano Carla Kihlstedt - violin, electric violin, Stroh violin
Eric Glick Rieman first proposed this project to Fred Frith who he had worked with while at Mills College. They wanted a third collaborator and Frith suggested Lesli Dalaba. The three of them had performed with John Zorn at Derek Bailey's Incus Festival at Tonic in NYC. Meanwhile, Glick Rieman had been impressed by Carla Kihlstedt and suggested her. They decided to ask both. Though the four improvisers knew one another, this recording represents their first meeting as a quartet. Their interaction reveals a high level of focus and playfulness and the resulting pieces display both a visceral and analytic intensity.
